Tests on the go!

Wait no longer! Here's our next installment of Tests on the Go!

This week, we take a closer look at the WISC-IV and the WAIS-III and IV:

WISC IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children IV) (2003)
Category: Achievement
Population: Ages 6-0 to 16-11.
Parts (in a cloth suitcase): 1 stimulus book + 1 administration and scoring manual + 1 technical and interpretive manual + 1 coding concept scoring key + 1 symbol search scoring key + 1 cancellation concept template + 1 set of 9 design blocks
Forms: Record form; Response booklet 1, 2

Designed to assess 'the cognitive ability of children'; provides four index scores that reflect different abilities, important in the expression of intelligent behavior in the classroom and beyond. There are 15 subtests in total (10 core, 5 supplemental). Traditional Verbal and Performance IQs are not calculated, although the test yields Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) and four Index scores: Full Scale IQ, Verbal, Perceptual, Working Memory, and Processing Speed .

WISC IV Integrated (2004)
Category: Achievement
Purpose: 'Designed to assess the cognitive ability and problem-solving process of children.'
Population: Ages 6-0 to 16-11.
Parts (in a cloth suitcase): 1 stimulus book 2 + 1 stimulus book 3 + 1 administration and scoring manual + 1 technical and interpretive manual + 1 scoring key (A and B) + 1 examiner slide scale + 1 block design process approach grid overlay (2) + 1 spatial span board + 1 Wechsler expanded block design set (12)
Forms: Record form; Response booklet 3

The WISC-IV Integrated is a merger of the WISC-IV and the revised and renormed WISC-III PI. It uses the same 10 core and 5 supplemental subtests as the WISC-IV and it yields the same higher level scores: Full Scale IQ, Verbal, Perceptual, Working Memory, and Processing Speed. What the WISC-IV Integrated add is: 16 process subtests and qualitative and quantitative observations and error scores, to provide more measures of cognitive processes.

WAIS III (1997)
Category: Intelligence and General Aptitude
Population: Ages 16-89
Parts: 1 administration and scoring manual + 1 stimulus booklet + 1 technical manual + 1 block design subtest + 1 object assembly subtest + 1 picture arrangement subtest + 1 digital symbol scoring template + 1 symbol search scoring template
Forms, etc.: Record form; Response booklet 1, 2

The three foci of the WAIS-III are to help assess psychoeducational disability, neuropsychiatric and organic dysfunction, and giftedness. The WAIS-III consists of 14 subtests that yield two sets of summary scores. The WAIS-III is paired with the revised and embellished Wechsler Memory Scale-III (WMS-III). The two tests share a subtest and a technical manual. The pairing of these two tests is useful, given the necessity to examine memory for geriatric, forensic, and neuropsychiatric purposes.

WAIS IV (2008)
Category: Intelligence and General Aptitude
Population: Ages 16-89
Parts (in a cloth suitcase): 1 administration and scoring manual + 1 technical and interpretive manual + 1 stimulus book 1 + 1 stimulus book 2 + 1 Wechsler standard block set + 1 cancellation scoring template + 1 coding scoring template + 1 symbol searching scoring key
Purpose: Designed to assess the intellectual ability of adults.

The WAIS-IV retains 12 subtests from the WAIS-III, the Object Assembly and Picture Arrangement subtests have been eliminated, and 3 new subtests were developed for this edition. Overall, these changes make the WAIS-IV less cumbersome regarding the amount of manipulatives. Finally, the WAIS-IV was designed to reduce the potential impact of age-related functional declines on test performance.

New in the library--Carl Jung: The Red Book

Now on display in the library is Jung’s Red Book, also known as Liber Novus (Latin for A New Book). It's a 205-page manuscript written and illustrated between approximately 1914 and 1930, which was not published or shown to the public until 2009. Until 2001, Jung’s heirs denied scholars access to the book, which he began after a falling-out with Sigmund Freud in 1913. Jung originally titled the manuscript Liber Novus but it was informally known and published as The Red Book. This unique volume represents the personal journey of Jung into his unconscious in search of an understanding of himself and the structure of the human personality in general.
